About Eastover and Elizabeth
Eastover and Elizabeth are close to each other, with Eastover considered one of Charlotte’s most affluent communities beginning in 1927 as an elite “automobile suburb” and the older turn-of-the-century Elizabeth neighborhood being more urban, dense, and redeveloped. Both neighborhoods are extremely close and convenient to Uptown Center City Charlotte, only minutes away and walkable for some. Charlotte’s E.C. Griffith Company developed Eastover and land-planning was done by one of the Southeast US’s premier urban planners, Earle Sumner Draper.
Eastover is mostly single family residential and has many of Charlotte’s priciest homes. The neighborhood is suburban in design and with many large and exclusive homes, lots and curving streetscapes. Eastover condominiums and Eastover townhomes are available and are some of Charlotte’s finest if not most expensive.
The Elizabeth neighborhood takes its name from Elizabeth College, a small Lutheran women’s college founded in 1897 on the present-day site of Presbyterian Hospital. Elizabeth began to develop rapidly after 1902, when a trolley line was completed, and the area was annexed into Charlotte in 1907. The city's first public park is here, Independence Park. Elizabeth became one of the most fashionable residential areas in Charlotte in the early 20th century. Elizabeth has a very mature tree canopy throughout and is a very livable, pedestrian-friendly neighborhood with ample sidewalks and the close proximity of businesses and residences.
The approximate boundaries of the Elizabeth neighborhood are, roughly, Randolph Road/4th Street to the Southwest; Independence Boulevard to the West and North; and a creek to the East. Elizabeth contains two major hospitals, Presbyterian Hospital and Mercy Hospital (now owned by Carolinas Medical Center). As a result and desire to be close to these medical centers, numerous medical offices have located in the area, mostly along Randolph Rd. Along and around 7th Street are numerous old houses that have been converted and restored into shops, offices, and restaurants... all adding a unique charm to the area.
At the western end of the neighborhood lie Independence Park and the American Legion Memorial Stadium. A development project is underway to revitalize Elizabeth Avenue with additional shops restaurants, and condominiums. One of the country's finest, Central Piedmont Community College is adjacent to Elizabeth and is undergoing huge and impressive additional expansion. A trolley/light rail service to the area is coming (back) soon.
