About Lake Norman and Mountain Isle

Lake Norman was created between 1959 and 1964 as part of the construction of the Cowans Ford Dam by Duke Energy, is the largest man made body of fresh water located entirely within North Carolina.  It is part of the Catawba River basin and was named after former Duke Power president Norman Cocke.  Lake Norman is sometimes referred to as the "inland sea" and has a shoreline of 520 miles and a surface area of more than 50 square miles.  The area has been a huge and widely popular recreational area and weekend home destination since built.  Especially since the early 1990’s Lake Norman has seen a residential permanent home and retail/commercial boom with many of the lakefront waterfront residences being some of the Charlotte region’s priciest homes.  Including waterfront, water access, off water communities, and surrounding areas, the areas boasts a very large and diverse offering of Lake Norman homes, Lake Norman Condominiums, and Lake Norman Townhomes.
