About Lake Wylie
The Lake Wylie region was created over 100 years ago with the formation of the lake from a hydro-electric dam built in 1904 by the Catawba (river) Power Company, a predecessor to Duke Energy. The orginial lake was only 668 acres, but in 1924 was increased to 13,443 acres and a 325 mile shoreline when a new hydro-electric station and rebuilt dam were built. The lake straddles Gaston County and Mecklenburg County in North Carolina and York County in South Carolina. The lake serves as a huge recreational resource for the entire region. The lake is in four counties and surrounded by various towns including Huntersville Cornelius and Davidson in the south, Denver on west, and Troutman and Mooresville on the north and northeast.
Though the shoreline was once spotted with mostly cabins and homes for weekend retreats, Lake Wylie residential single family and Lake Wylie condominium and townhome communities have become abundant since the late 1970’s and the town of Lake Wylie, South Carolina as incorporated since this time. The Lake is less than 30 minutes from the heart of Uptown Center City Charlotte and is well connected to various older and many large new upscale shopping hubs within the region. Duke Power State Park and numerous boat landings, marinas, and parks provide easy access to Lake Norman for the entire Metro Charlotte Community.
