About University City
Home to the University Research Park, Verizon Amphitheatre Charlotte, and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC), the University (University City) area grew out of a need and demand in the early 1970’s for the Charlotte region to expand into the region’s less-dense northeast corridor where available land, resources, and an already developed and improving road system were already in place.
The University area would now likely rank in as one of the Carolinas’ top ten cities if a separate municipality. Office, medical, retail, shopping, restaurants, residential single family and condominiums/townhomes are abundant in the large and fast growing area. Well-respected Insurance/investment TIAA-CREF is located here, as well as the huge new retail Swedish furniture and home furnishings giant IKEA.
Golf courses are prevalent in the region, including Highland Creek and the Tradition. The region also adjacent to the southwest side of Cabarrus County including Concord Mills and the Lowes Motor Speedway and so with continued development growth these two areas have almost grown together as one region in two counties.
