About York County SC

York County, SC (including Fort Mill, Rock Hill, and Tega Cay) is within the Metro Charlotte SMSA area and an in-demand place to live, play, and work. I-77 provides easy access into Charlotte and Lake Wylie and the Catawba River are close by.

The town of Fort Mill is closest to Charlotte and was established in 1873. It takes its name from a colonial-era fort built by the British, and a grist mill on nearby Steele Creek. The Catawba Indians made their home in Fort Mill for many years. Scotch-Irish settlers began arriving in the 1750s and 1760's and a small settlement soon developed. Fort Mill grew rapidly in the late 1800s as textile mills were established. Schools, huge commericial and residential development growth, and easy commuting proximity to Charlotte has created large demand and a development boom in Fort Mill and northern York County, SC. Fort Mill is home to Springs Industries (textiles) and numerous other well-known companies.

Rock Hill is south of Fort Mill, is York County’s largest city and the fourth largest in the state. Rock Hill is home to well-known Winthrop University and York Technical College and is located just south of Lake Wylie. The city was founded in 1852 and was named for a flint hill of rock that was mostly in the way and therefore removed when a rail line was built from Charlotte to Columbia. The train depot built at the site became known as “Rock Hill”.

Fort Mill, Rock Hill (and Tega Cay) are so close and convenient to the entire Metro Charlotte region that they are very much in demand as places to live. Residential single family homes in Fort Mill, Rock Hill, and Tega Cay are offered at most all price ranges and with various community features and offerings.
